Kinesio Tape

Here at Mike Varney Physiotherapy all of the physiotherapists have attended courses on kinesio tape techiques and are qualified to treat injuries with this specialised type of taping. You may have noticed kinesio tape being worn by popular athletes including David Beckham, Tom Daley, Gareth Bale and most recently Novak Djokovic at the Australian Tennis Open.

We believe that kinesio taping is beneficial as part of our patients treatments, not only for athletes and those participating in sport, but also for the reduction of pain and supporting weak joints. We have also found kinesio tape techniques are very successful in the treatment of adolescent injuries, especially in young aspiring athletes.

Kinesio taping techiques were developed and introduced in the late 1970's by Dr. Kenzo Kase. Kinesio tape is a waterproof tape made out of a high cotton material and has the thickness, weight and flexibility of the skin. In contrast to other taping Kinesio tape does not restrict the movement of the skin, joints or muscles, instead it encourages the bodies own healing mechanism. The tape is applied to the skin

and can last up to 4/5 days. It is comfortable to wear and allergic skin reactions are very rare. Waterproof kinesio tape does not need to be renewed after sports activity or contact with water.

How does Kinesio Tape Work?

When a muscle is inflamed the space between the skin and muscle is compressed causing pain. By stretching a muscle and applying kinesio tape convulsions are formed when the area is relaxed. This increases the space between the skin and muscle, improving drainage and blood flow, and reducing pain.
